Student loans
The Times, 03/12/2013, p.35, Unattributed
Sir, Your article (Business, Dec 2) on the way the London School of Economics is raising capital to finance building work implies that student fees are paid by students. They are not. On admission students now incur a debt which is to be recovered over many years, if ever, through the tax system.
A confluence of modern ills
International New York Times, 03/12/2013, p.5, Beth Gardiner
Eric Neumayer, a professor at the London School of Economics, co-wrote a study that found that nations with legal prostitution had more inward trafficking. But he said it was unclear whether criminalization worsened prostitutes' work conditions…

Boss harassed me by using word 'golliwog', claims chef: Court to decide if word is inherently offensive to black people
Mail Online UK (Web), 03/12/2013, Claire Ellicott
The company has always insisted that the Golly character was withdrawn for commercial reasons rather than a reaction to the controversy surrounding the figure. Miss Lindsay was working as an assistant chef manager at the LSE's Bloomsbury student halls in February 2009 when the comment was made by chef manager Mr McAleese. He used the word while discussing 'the change to the label of Robertson's jam', the court heard.

The economic impacts of China’s consumer babies
Bangkok Post, 03/12/13, Dr Jin Keyu
Written by Jin Keyu, lecturer in economics at the London School of Economics.
China's leaders have now agreed to relax the country's decades-old "one-child" policy. Couples now will be permitted to have two children if one parent is an only child (previously, both parents had to be only children), making the new rule applicable to most of the post-1980s generation that grew up in urban areas.

Finally, a private members' club with a valiant mission - to help the homeless
Telegraph (Web), 02/12/2013, Josephine Fairley
Those who join are invited not only to pay the (fairly reasonable for a London club) £600 a year membership, but also to set up a monthly donation to help St. Barnabas’s work, through their ‘Employment Academy’. (Seems churlish not to, frankly.) The Academy (headed by LSE alumna Amy Leaning, who’s also a life coach, trainer and mentor) will teach hospitality and industry skills. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-business/10483744/Finally-a-private-members-club-with-a-valiant-mission-to-

Black chef sues after boss said 'golliwog' during Robertson's jam conversation
Telegraph (Web), 02/12/2013, Alice Philipson
A black chef is suing his boss for racial harassment after he used the word 'golliwog' during a conversation about the old label on Robertson's jam. Denise Lindsay, 45, was working for the London School of Economics when chef manager, Mark McAleese, said the controversial word in front of her. Now her lawyers are battling to convince three top judges that the word is inherently offensive to black people and almost always discriminatory – no matter in what context used.
