Hall will be judged on how he handles his inherited crises
Evening Standard, 17/04/2013, p.44, Roy Greenslade
On the face of it, the methodology employed by Panorama’s team, headed by reporter John Sweeney, was reasonable enough. They were posing as students from the London School of Economics on a study trip organised by Sweeney’s wife, Tomiko. She must have been encouraged that the ruse would work smoothly because she pulled off a similar trick last year without attracting any diplomatic hostility (or media attention) after filing a despatch on BBC’s Radio 4 about life in Pyongyang. Clearly, this time around, some of the students — three out of 10 evidently — felt they had been duped and placed in harm’s way. The LSE’s chairman, Peter Sutherland, took up their complaints by going public and demanding that the BBC pull its programme.

North Korea trip students hit out at LSE
The Guardian, 18/04/2013, p.7, Josh Halliday
Six of the 10 London School of Economics students who travelled to North Korea with an undercover BBC Panorama crew have rounded on the university, claiming that it has placed them in greater danger than the trip to the secretive state itself. The students – Hoe-Yeong Loke, Mila Akimova and four unnamed others – complained that the university's decision to speak publicly about the undercover expedition, led by the Panorama presenter John Sweeney, had exposed them to threats from Pyongyang. In an open letter sent to the LSE director Craig Calhoun and chairman Peter Sutherland, the students said: "We feel that we have now been put in more risk than was originally the case, as a result of the LSE's decision to go public with their story."

From the BBC and the LSE: a storm in a British teacup
The Guardian, 18/04/2013, p.32, Timothy Garton Ash
The LSE had legitimate grounds for concern. It seems that a few of those on the trip had not been told about their journalistic accompaniment. The students subsequently received bullying emails from a North Korean official, threatening to publish their "personal data" because they had broken North Korean law. If any of them wanted to pursue an academic career in North Korean studies, this would not be a good start. But the LSE's highly public reaction was over the top, and arguably counterproductive.

BBC man faced spy rumour on way to North Korea
The Guardian, 18/04/2013, p.8, Josh Halliday
A BBC Panorama cameraman who posed as a former student to report undercover from North Korea was suspected of being a spy before he even reached Pyongyang. The cover of film-maker, Alexander Niakaris, was blown only hours after he joined a group of London School of Economics (LSE) students in Beijing, where they changed planes before travelling on to North Korea. Ceri Thomas, the BBC head of news programmes, admitted on Wednesday that the corporation was forced to tell the students that he was actually an undercover journalist embedded in their group alongside Panorama presenter John Sweeney.

LSE has put us at risk, say students on N Korea trip
The Daily Telegraph, 18/04/2013, p.25, Unattributed
Students who joined a trip with the BBC claim they have been put in danger by the university's decision to expose the journalist's infiltration. In an open letter, six of the 10 students from the London School of Economics criticised the university for "going public" without consulting them. It was claimed that the Panorama reporter John Sweeney used the students as "human shields".

Axis of evil consequences
Times Higher Education, 18/04/2013, p.7, John Morgan
Universities are likely to tighten up on overseas student visits because of the BBC’s use of a London School of Economics group to gain access to North Korea, a registrar has predicted. Three BBC journalists, including reporter John Sweeney, visited North Korea in March with 10 LSE students in a trip arranged by Tomiko Newson, Mr Sweeney’s wife and an LSE graduate.

General Coverage

Sir John Burgh
The Times, 18/04/2013, p.51, Unattributed
Burgh attended the Friends School in Sibford, Oxfordshire, one of the Quaker schools that was taking in refugee children. There was no money for him to continue his schooling beyond the age of 15 and he left Sibford in 1940 to work in munitions factories. He took correspondence courses in a variety of subjects for six years, and then went to the London School of Economics, initially as an evening student. In 1947 he won a bursary to become a full-time student and two years later was elected president of its student union.

Capital investment cannot explain growth rates
Financial Times, 18/04/2013, p.12, Unattributed
Sir, Martin Wolf agrees with John Van Reenen that the UK’s economic performance suffers from inadequate investment in human and physical capital (“Britain’s economy should not go back to the future”, April 12). This conclusion derives from the work of the London School of Economics Growth Commission, of which Professor Van Reenen and Professor Tim Bresley are co-chairs.

Stroud, a learning technologist at the London School of Economics’ Centre for Learning Technology was typical of many. “I participated up to week four [of five], but didn’t interact much with other course participants beyond week two,” she notes, citing competing deadlines at work as one reason why her participation tailed off.

King Juan Carlos falls from grace in scandal-weary Spain
Reuters UK (Web), 17/04/2013, Elisabeth Oleary
"People are extremely frustrated with the economic situation and want someone to blame, so it's a situation where anything could happen," said Jonathan Hopkin, a politics expert at the London School of Economics. Sources familiar with palace thinking say the royal family is concerned about the decline in its popularity and is eager to avoid adding more uncertainty to the climate of crisis for ordinary Spaniards. The palace is monitoring public opinion extremely closely via social media and its own polls.

No industrial policy, we're British
Financial Times (Web), 18/04/2013, Unattributed
Two years ago George Osborne, chancellor, wished that a 'march of the makers' would help to lift the UK economy. But as the stagnation continues, there is little sign of an industrial revival. Professor John Van Reenen, director of the Centre for Economic Performance at the LSE, explains to FT leader writer Ferdinando Giugliano how industrial policy can help to get the economy going again.

Unlawfully funded Yes campaign influenced Children’s Referendum result, court told
Irish Times (Web), 18/04/2013, Mary Carolan
A political scientist has told the High Court he believes the Government’s unlawful publicly funded information campaign in the Children’s Referendum probably significantly influenced the Yes result. Michael Bruter, of the London School of Economics, said a survey of voters after the November 2012 referendum pointed to an “extremely effective” campaign by the Government which managed to “blur the differences” between its material and that of the Referendum Commission.
