The arrogant BBC has put in danger British academics Nicholas Stern
The Times, 17/04/2013, p.26, Nicholas Stern
The Panorama who masqueraded The Panorama journalists who masqueraded as members of the LSE to film undercover in North Korea acted recklessly. They have increased the risks for all UK academics working in potentially dangerous parts of the world. The BBC has cited in its defence the public interest in the programme, which was broadcast on Monday evening. But this end, however worthy in itself, did not justify the means. In particular, it has undermined the pursuit of knowledge and understanding across the world by academics from the UK, and indeed elsewhere.
BBC deception
The Times, 17/04/2013, p.29, Unattributed
Sir, As a result of the BBC's deception, other countries are now more likely to be suspicious of applications from LSE, and less likely to grant consent for visits, thereby diminishing the ability of future students and staff to undertake legitimate academic research and acquire suitable experience.
All roads lead to Pyongyang
Evening Standard, 16/04/2013, p.17, Unattributed
PANORAMA reporter John Sweeney has been criticised for risking the welfare of students from the London School of Economics whom he and his Japanese wife, Tomiko, used as cover to get into North Korea where they secretly filmed an investigative report for the BBC.

BBC defends secret North Korea trip
Morning Star, 16/04/2013, p.7, Unattributed
BBC BOSSES were forced to defend the making of a documentary about North Korea yesterday after three students complained journalists used them as human shields. The London School of Economics students were part of a 10-person study trip which unwittingly provided cover to BBC journalist John Sweeney and two camera men who were shooting footage for a Panorama film.

A murky mission
The Daily Telegraph, 17/04/2013, p.19, Unattributed
The BBC team entered the country as part of a delegation from the London School of Economics. Although the LSE itself was unaware of the ruse, the corporation maintains that the participants gave their informed consent. This has been disputed by at least one student, who said they were not fully apprised of the fate that might befall them were the subterfuge uncovered. The fact that it wasn’t will be of little comfort to them or their parents, who would not have expected their children to be placed in harm’s way. For this reason alone, the LSE is entitled to be angry.

Honoured' to join the BBC - the man who tore it to bits
The Independent, 17/04/2013, p.23, Ian Burrell
Panorama, the BBC's flagship investigative programme, which is facing a problematic period after criticism of two documentaries, will await his thoughts. The London School of Economics demanded the withdrawal of a programme on North Korea, shown on Monday night, because it allegedly endangered students used as cover by the presenter John Sweeney.

BBC exploited me, says LSE student who went to North Korea
Telegraph (Web), 16/04/2013, Rosa Silverman
A student who joined a trip to North Korea with a BBC crew secretly making a Panorama programme has claimed she was exploited by the broadcaster. The corporation has faced criticism for using a group of students from the London School of Economics as a human shield and placing them in danger while making the documentary. Speaking on condition of anonymity as the row escalated, one female member of the party said they were only told they were to be used as “cover” for the filming hours before they entered the country.

BBC Panorama in North Korea: 'We believed John Sweeney was a professor until trip was nearly over'
Mail Online UK (Web), 16/04/2013, Damien Gayle
A student has told how she was conned by the BBC into believing its journalist was a history professor so he travel to North Korea for a Panorama investigation. The London School of Economics student, who wants to remain anonymous, has intensified pressure on the BBC, which is under fire over a Pyongyang documentary shown last night. The student told MailOnline: '[Panorama journalist] John Sweeney was presented to use as a history professor from a university in Beijing. 'I was wondering why they were filming him so much. It was two days before then end of the trip that I realised he was an undercover journalist.'

Panorama North Korea briefing for LSE students held in a pub
guardian.co.uk (Web), 16/04/2013, Josh Halliday
The key meeting where BBC journalists briefed students on the risks of travelling to North Korea with an undercover journalist for John Sweeney's Panorama documentary was held in a busy London pub where the group drank alcohol. Two students at the briefing in the George IV pub on the London School of Economics (LSE) campus complained that it was "informal" and "involved alcohol consumption" ahead of the trip to Pyongyang where Sweeney intended to film an undercover documentary.

Stalking the Big Four
Financial Times, 17/04/2013, p.13, Adam Jones; Simon Rabinovitch
As part of this revival, the leading western accountants – then the “Big Six” rather than the “Big Four” – were allowed to set up joint ventures with local bodies in the early 1990s. “They had nothing in China to build on after the Cultural Revolution. They had to start again by letting the Big Six come in and train people and write manuals,” says Richard Macve, a London School of Economics professor.

A citadel of finance atop once-derelict docks
Reuters UK (Web), 16/04/2013, Unattributed
"If you look at the raw numbers, for 100 years Britain was in a relative decline compared to the United States, France and Germany so although we were improving our standard of living, relative to other countries we were falling further behind," said John Van Reenen, director of the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics. Van Reenen, born in 1965, stood on the streets protesting against Thatcher when he was a student at Cambridge in the late 1980s, but said the data showed Thatcher had helped turn Britain round economically, albeit at a human cost. "The century of relative decline was arrested and to some degree turned around by the policies she had. But it is not all rosy in the garden - there were costs to that strategy. The main one is inequality which also increased hugely over her reign."
