UNIVERSITY ACCUSES BBC OF NORTH KOREA RUSE
The Sunday Telegraph, 14/04/2013, p.12, Unattributed
The team of three, which included reporter John Sweeney, travelled to the secretive state last month as part of a visit by members of a London School of Economics student society. The university said last night that the genuine students had been "deliberately misled" by the BBC and put in "serious danger".

Panorama exposé of North Korea 'put students at risk'
The Observer, 14/04/2013, p.20, Cass Jones
The London School of Economics has accused the BBC of endangering its students and damaging its reputation after using its name to gain access to North Korea and film undercover for a Panorama documentary.

BBC report 'endangers LSE students'
The Independent On Sunday, 14/04/2013, p.7, Matthew Bell
John Sweeney joined a party of students from the London School of Economics who were visiting the secretive state. Tony Hall, the BBC director general, last night refused a request from the LSE chairman, Peter Sutherland, to withdraw the film.

The LSE's demand is pompous and hypocritical: Edward Lucas
The Times, 15/04/2013, p.26, Edward Lucas
My 25 years as a foreign correspondent left my LSE tie frayed. The scruffy blue polyester, with its crest featuring two books and a beaver, has prompted recognition and conversation from fellow alumni in the most unlikely places.

Tony Hall: the wring cycle
The Guardian, 15/04/2013, p.28, Unattributed
Panorama's undercover filming in North Korea raises much more profound questions about the nature of the BBC's journalism and the ethics of undercover reporting. Since complaints like the one received at the weekend from the LSE by the BBC Trust chairman, Lord Patten, are passed automatically to the DG, Lord Hall is unavoidably in the frontline.

BBC trio posed as students to film inside North Korea
The Daily Telegraph, 15/04/2013, p.1, Graeme Paton
They travelled with real students last month to make a Panorama documentary in the totalitarian state. However, a bitter row has now bro-ken out between the LSE and the BBC over fears that the real students could have been put in danger if the undercover team had been exposed. Alex Peters-Day, the secretary of the LSE Students Union said: “The trip was organized by the BBC as a ruse to get into North Korea and that’s disgraceful.”

BBC kept students in dark over Korea trip
The Times, 15/04/2013, p.1, Ben Webster and Kaya Burgess
The BBC withheld key information from students, placing them in danger during the making of an undercover documentary in North Korea, according to the London School of Economics. The group from the LSE were not informed until they had landed in Beijing, en route to Pyongyang, that they would be accompanied by a three-person Panorama film crew posing as scholars and academics.

Uni fury at secret N Korea BBC trip
The Sun, 15/04/2013, p.4, Leigh Holmwood
Panorama sent a journalist and two other crew members into the hermit communist state as part of a London School of Economics tour. But furious university bosses said they were not told. They demanded the BBC pull tonight's programme North Korea Undercover — but the corporation refused.

Panorama was worth risking lives for, says BBC chief
The Independent, 15/04/2013, p.1, Jerome Taylor
The corporation is facing calls to pull tonight’s Panorama special by veteran correspondent John Sweeney after he smuggled himself into the secretive state alongside his wife and a cameraman by attaching them to a group of 10 London School of Economics students who visited the country last month. Defending the decision, BBC News head of programmes Ceri Thomas said: “This is an important piece of public interest journalism.”

Risk and responsibility at the BBC
The Independent, 15/04/2013, p.14, Amol Rajan
But there are real questions relating to risk and responsibility. The London School of Economics denies responsibility, saying it did not organise or sponsor the group - it was promoted by a university society - and complains that the reputation of its academics for independence has been put at risk. These are legitimate points. The BBC, though, does have a case to answer.

BBC clashes with LSE over undercover filming in North Korea on student trip
The Guardian, 15/04/2013, p.3, Jason Deans
The BBC has insisted it will broadcast a Panorama documentary about North Korea, despite protests from the London School of Economics (LSE) that journalist John Sweeney put its staff working abroad at risk by posing as a student from the institution to gain access to the communist state.

BBC is accused of using students as 'human shield' to film in North Korea
The Daily Telegraph, 15/04/2013, p.1, Graeme Paton; Alice Philipson
The BBC has been accused of using university students on a trip to North Korea as a “human shield”, putting their lives in jeopardy to film an undercover programme. A three-strong BBC team, led by reporter John Sweeney, posed a student members of the London School of Economics’ Grimshaw Club, a university society.

BBC film crew 'put students in danger'
The Daily Mirror, 15/04/2013, p.15, Adrian Shaw
THE BBC was yesterday accused of risking students' lives while filming in North Korea. The London School of Economics said reporter John Sweeney failed to tell students he and two others were making a Panorama documentary when joining them on their trip to the secretive state.

BBC defends Korea film that 'risked LSE students'
Metro, 15/04/2013, p.16, Aidan Radnedge
The corporation was accused of using the ten London School of Economics undergraduates as 'human shields' and was urged to axe the Panorama documentary, due to be screened tonight. It was told by academics that the clandestine operation could jeopardise other staff who work in sensitive countries such as China.

University assails BBC over trip to North Korea
International Herald Tribune, 15/04/2013, p.17, Ravi Somaiya
As tensions escalated between Pyongyang and the rest of the world late last month, a small group of students from the London School of Economics crossed into North Korea, a country sealed to most outsiders. But among the students on the apparently educational trip were three BBC journalists filming an undercover documentary.

BBC in 'shield' row
Financial Times, 15/04/2013, p.1, Unattributed

BBC put UK students at risk in Korea
Daily Star, 15/04/2013, p.14, Emily Hall
THE BBC was last night accused of endangering students after an undercover reporter infiltrated their trip to North Korea. John Sweeney joined a party from the London School of Economics but failed to declare he was a journalist before taking part in the eight-day tour. He then used the footage filmed to make North Korea Undercover documentary for Panorama.

Panorama 'put students' lives at risk in N Korea'
Daily Mail, 15/04/2013, p.1, Unattributed
BBC put the lives of British university students in danger by using them as 'human shields' to film undercover in North Korea, it was claimed yesterday. Ten students from the London School of Economics, the youngest of whom was 18, travelled to the Communist state with a film crew including a Panorama journalist. Parents and university officials claim the group were ‘deliberately misled’ by the BBC, and were not fully informed about the true purpose of the trip until they were about to enter the country.

BBC 'used British students as human shields' in N Korea
Daily Express, 15/04/2013, p.15, Mark Reynolds
A TOP university yesterday accused the BBC of putting its students in danger by secretly filming an undercover documentary during a trip to North Korea. The London School of Economics said the BBC failed to tell them it was covertly making a film about the secretive state. Three journalists, including the respected reporter John Sweeney, joined the student society trip last month.

Professor Craig Calhoun was interviewed via telephone about the secret Panorama filming during a trip by LSE students to North Korea:

“The lies and deception from the outset, putting the students at risk, then being unwilling to take responsibility for the risks they've caused. I do support investigative journalism, I think the public has an interest in knowing about North Korea, I do think there are many problems with North Korea, but abusing good practices and putting people in danger is not the way to pursue this sort of story or improve public knowledge.”

The reporter involved, John Sweeney, defended the Panorama film:

“We told them enough, but not so much as to possibly imperil them if something went bad. Nothing went bad. We got away with it. It was preposterous, but the students helped us and the majority of students are happy for the documentary to go ahead. I find it extraordinary that an institution that believes in free thought should call for a documentary not to air.”

BBC News Head of Programmes, Ceri Thomas, defended the Panorama film:

“The salient fact is what would happen to the students were a journalist or several journalist to be discovered on the trip, we told them that, they could be arrested or detained. We told them twice before we left of the UK and once heading into North Korea. They have the information to make their minds up. There is a vital public interest for the public to see what is going on in North Korea when we do not understand what the motivations and intentions of the regime are. We very rarely get access and for the BBC to have this documentary is an important piece. There is a balancing act to be performed.”

Professor Craig Calhoun was interviewed via satellite about the Panorama film:

“The problem seems to be what the students were told. The students were only told there was a plan for the journalists to accompany them at the last moment. They were already in Beijing, China, ready to go to Pyongyang, North Korea. They did not have an opportunity to consider it in advance. They were not given full information. That there would be three journalists, they would be filming. They did not understand the risks.”

“One of the students made it absolutely clear that she was not made aware of what happened. For us, this is a matter of student welfare - students were lied to, they weren't able to give their consent. I think the trip was organised by the BBC as potentially a ruse for them to get into North Korea and that's disgraceful. They've used students essentially as a human shield in this situation."

“The BBC unscrupulously used a number of students as human cover for a filming operation without fully informing all of them what was happening. If academics cannot go to any part of the world on the basis of trust in terms of what they say they are doing and what they are about, this undermines the integrity of the institution."

"The BBC has admitted the group was deliberately misled about the involvement of the BBC. The line that was used was that a journalist would join the visit," Gaskell said. "We were told the BBC had undertaken a risk assessment and it had been at the highest level. We clearly have a different view on what is acceptable risk. I think it's potentially extremely dangerous."

Poll: Did the BBC and John Sweeney's undercover report in North Korea recklessly endanger LSE students?
The Independent (Web), 14/04/2013, Unattributed
The BBC has been accused of putting LSE students needlessly in danger after journalist John Sweeney travelled undercover with a group of postgraduate students to report on North Korea. The LSE claims John Sweeney accompanied the students, who were part of the Grimshaw Club, after obtaining false identification claiming he was a PhD history student at the university. North Korea is notoriously strict on allowing journalists entry, and the discovery of false papers can be punished by imprisonment and heavy fines.

The row between the BBC and the London School of Economics over the subterfuge employed by Panorama to get into North Korea makes the front page of several newspapers. In an opinion column in the Times, Edward Lucas, the international editor of The Economist and a former LSE student, backs the BBC. He accuses the LSE of being "pompous and hypocritical" in claiming that lives were put at risk and demanding that Monday's programme be cancelled. The Independent believes the LSE has a point and the BBC has questions to answer about "risk and responsibility". However, it thinks calls for the film to be canned are misguided. The story also features on the front pages of the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph.

LSE in print

Last year, there were more businesses started in the UK than at any time in history
The Sunday Telegraph, 14/04/2013, p.9, Unattributed
Rohan Silva believes Britain is one of the best places in the world to create a new business. He's so confident about the claim, in fact, that he's going to put his own money and future behind it.

Fire up the winning formula of the 1980s
The Sunday Times, 14/04/2013, p.4, David Smith
Rather, I want to draw out a more fundamental lesson. At the recent Royal Economic Society conference, professors Tim Besley and John van Reenen of the London School of Economics (LSE) presented the findings and recommendations of its Growth Commission. One of the most striking was in what they called "the economic story of the UK".

As the liberal sneers persist, who now speaks for Essex man?
The Sunday Times, 14/04/2013, p.23, Camilla Cavendish
But her choice of liberty over equality created a rising tide that lifted most boats. As the LSE Growth Commission recently pointed out, and contrary to Ken Livingstone's assertions last week, the period from 1979 to 2007 bucked the trend of almost a century of British economic growth.

Warnings fail to halt sales of complex savings plans
The Sunday Times, 14/04/2013, p.6, Holly Thomas
Martin Wheatley, FCA chief executive, said consumers act instinctively when they see the high returns advertised, and trust the brand behind the product. Speaking at the London School of Economics last week, he addressed how to weed out products that are too complex for their target market.

It's a punk-folk thing
Evening Standard, 12/04/2013, p.36, Andre Paine
The words Free Born on his fingers are inspired by the Levellers — "not the band", he clarifies, but the political movement. A London School of Economics history graduate, Turner has modified his anarchist views and now describes himself as a libertarian.

Here's the man with all the answers
The Times, 13/04/2013, p.16, Will Pavia
He came out to his parents at the age of 20, after a year abroad studying at the London School of Economics. That year gave him "kind of a buffer zone... a whole continent away. You kind of establish yourself there and kind of test it out.

Weekend birthdays
The Guardian, 13/04/2013, p.46, Unattributed
Simon Roberts, professor of law, London School of Economics, 72;

Other lives
The Guardian, 13/04/2013, p.47, Madeline Hutchins
Richard was born in West Cork, Ireland. The family moved to England in 1921 and he was educated at Bradfield College, Reading, and studied law at the London School of Economics. He was devoted to the youth hostel movement.

Manufacturers remain divided over legacy of Thatcher policies
Financial Times, 13/04/2013, p.2, Brian Groom
"What happened to British companies, the ones that were any good, is that they had to specialise and internationalise," says Sir Geoffrey Owen, senior fellow at the London School of Economics and former editor of the Financial Times. He believes Thatcher's policies changed manufacturing for the better.

Margaret Thatcher showed us why tuition fees won't work
Telegraph (Web), 12/04/2013, Gervas Huxley
For example, in London the price of a one year taught masters in economics at University College is 14,250 at the London School of Economics is 22,176. Why? After all, the content of these courses is almost identical. The price difference depends almost entirely on differences in the prestige of these

Maurice Saatchi: The woman who rebranded Britain
Telegraph (Web), 12/04/2013, Unattributed
subjects as dependent children, is the greatest conceivable despotism and destroys all freedom. Hers was a just cause, a noble purpose, anchored in economics. Beatrice Webb, the founder of the London School of Economics, used to say that people fall in love with funny things: Some people fall in love with their chauffeur. I fell in love with Soviet Communism.
