Novartis' failure to patent Glivec in India is down to timing
Financial Times, 05/04/2013, p.10
Letter from Dr Ken Shadlen, LSE: Sir, Your reporting on the dispute between Novartis and the government of India over the patent on Glivec repeats a serious error that distorts the case. You write (“Novartis warns on India verdict”, April 1) that Glivec “was ineligible for a patent because it was a so-called salt – a subtly modified version of a related compound that had been previously patented”. That is incorrect…

Labour's £200 m golden goodbyes
The Daily Telegraph, 05/04/2013, p.2, Steven Swinford
Professor Tony Travers, an expert in local government at the London School of Economics, said: “It is no surprise that the cost of redundancies has gone up. It’s an inevitable consequence of the Government’s decision to cut local government spending so fast. If it has happened more slowly no doubt many of these redundancies could have been avoided.”

Grass is greener in cathedral city
The Times, 05/04/2013, p.13, Jayne Dowle
What really characterises Durham though is its university, ranked regularly in the UK top five by The Times’ Good University Guide, alongside the likes of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and the London School of Economics. There are just over 11,000 undergraduates here, and in a compact city where the total population is only about 43,000, the level to which students and university dominate is significant.

Jean Floud
The Guardian, 05/04/2013, p.38, Robert Skidelsky
At the London School of Economics, she studied sociology under David Glass, TH Marshall, Morris Ginsberg and Karl Mannheim, graduating in 1936. Two years later she married an upper-class communist, Peter Floud, then starting a curatorship at the Victoria and Albert Museum, with whom she had three children, Andrew, Frances and Esther. It was in his leftwing upper-class milieu that she shed the traces of her working-class origins.

What do you mean by 'class'? | Richard Seymour
guardian.co.uk (Web), 04/04/2013, Richard Seymour
Is it time to throw conventional class dogmas aside? The BBC, which has just published a detailed survey of social class in the United Kingdom, produced by academics at the London School of Economics and the University of Manchester, says it is. Using some of the ideas of the late sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, the researchers claim that while people "think they belong to a particular class on the basis of their job and income", those are merely "aspects of economic capital. Sociologists think that your class is indicated by your cultural capital and social capital."

BBC's seven social classes: The Wire version
guardian.co.uk (Web), 04/04/2013, Paul Owen
In fact, what the seven classes defined by the BBC, LSE and Manchester University reminded me much more of was the drug-dealing hierarchy in The Wire, an American TV series the Guardian has written about once or twice before.

The workers united will never be defeated?
Spectator (Web), 04/04/2013, Rod Liddle
There’s a BBC website where you can find out what class you are, according to new criteria drawn up by some bloke at the LSE and a babe from Manchester University. There are apparently seven new classes – which I suppose is designed to replace the old registrar General’s Scale – ranging from ‘Elite’…

Family, not money, is the key to your child?s performance at school
Telegraph (Web), 04/04/2013, Cristina Odone
Here's a piece of news that will send a certain kind of educationalist screaming from the room: family, not income, is key to a child's school performance. The London School of Economics, bastion of Left-of-centre thinking on all serious issues, conducted the study on disadvantaged children in England.
