Rioters 'treated more leniently now than a year ago'
The Daily Telegraph, 21/09/2012, p.14, Unattributed
Offenders who took part in last year's riots are being treated more leniently now than in the immediate aftermath, a leading criminologist has claimed. Prof Roger Graef, 76, who holds a visiting post at the London School of Economics, said there had been an "evident trend" of rioters escaping jail in recent weeks as the courts continue to hear cases arising from the disorder last August.

Technology, both miracle and burden
International Herald Tribune, 21/09/2012, p.2, Chrystia Freeland
But economists who have been studying the impact of globalization and the technology revolution on the labor market in Western industrialized economies are less sanguine, at least in the short term. John van Reenan, professor of economics and director of the Center for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics and Political Science, is one of the foremost students of this transition. He thinks the biggest impact of the e-commerce revolution, and its counterparts in sectors like the law or accounting, won’t be on the number of jobs in the economy; it will be on how well they pay.

Lib Dems' Tax Plans Could Strain U.K. Coalition
The Wall Street Journal (Europe), 21/09/2012, p.7, Ainsley Thomson; Nicholas Winning
After 2½ years as junior partners in the coalition, the center-left party has seen its poll ratings plummet to around 10% from the 23% it won in the 2010 election. Many of the party's former supporters have been alienated by its decisions in government, and its leadership is being questioned over the party's repeated failure to deliver on core aims. "It looks as if they are in the worst of all possible worlds," said Patrick Dunleavy, professor of political science at the London School of Economics.

Radical local government - Political Petri dishes
The Economist, 22/09/2012
And the capital exerts a magnetic pull on ambitious career-makers from across the country, points out Tony Travers of the London School of Economics. A 2010 census found that only 18.5% of England’s local councillors were under 50.

Why the British Press Can't Figure Out What It Wants From Kate Middleton
The New Republic (19 September 2012)
The truth is, Britain’s first family has long hovered between sacred symbol and tabloid fodder. The monarchs are trapped in a “Faustian pact” with the media, Charlie Beckett, the director of the London School of Economics’ media think tank, told me. They rely on press coverage to fulfill their purpose as a model of national values, but they also depend on a cultivated mystique—which the media can undercut by airing their dirty laundry or making them look too effete. (Case in point: British papers love to hate Prince Charles for his aristocratic pastimes).
