Education for all Why do so few men take gender studies courses?
The Guardian, 20/11/2012, p.13, Unattributed
In the three previous years there have been a quarter to a third men: a better turnout than on many gender programmes. Yet at the LSE this year, it's not much better: out of 85 students on gender studies master's courses, eight are men. Last year it was five out of 89 students.

No amount of moralising will alleviate this hardship
The Guardian, 20/11/2012, p.31, Polly Toynbee
“David Cameron, in his now notorious Hugo Young lecture, accepted the measure and claimed inequality mattered. "More unequal countries do worse according to every social indicator" he said – though he has now reneged from that. He also claimed: "As the state expanded under Labour, our society became more not less unfair." Not true, says Professor John Hills, the LSE's great expert on inequality. He says the poor caught up significantly with the middle, and all those below the line did better by exactly the same amount.”

"So for Spain the prospect, without Catalonia, is complete disintegration of the country." This would be a tough moment to try independence. Catalonia's economy is shrinking

Velvet divorce worked out well - but as partition, not separation

experience due to their long communist legacy. While the Czechoslovak partition is widely seen as a model of how to divide a country peacefully, Abby Innes, a lecturer at the London School of Economics and author of Czechoslovakia: The Short Goodbye, argues against using it as the template for other dissolutions. "I think it's a partition rather than a legitimate and mandated separation.

Ground war would lose Israel its allies
The Daily Mirror, 20/11/2012, p.7, Fawaz Gerges
THERE is a race against time between escalation and international diplomacy in the Middle East. The odds of an Israeli invasion of Gaza are 50-50 in my opinion. Although Israel is massing its troops on the Gaza border, they are trying to exert maximum pressure on Hamas to accept its conditions for a ceasefire. An invasion would have major implications

The poor are growing richer - and it's nothing to do with redistribution
City AM, 20/11/2012, p.24, Ryan Bourne
in the top 1 per cent today may not have been in the top 1 per cent five years ago. In his recent book Changing Fortunes, Stephen Jenkins of the London School of Economics found just 17 per cent of households remained in the same tenth of the income distribution in 2006 compared to their original 1991 position, suggesting fairly

Happy teenagers earn more as adults
guardian.co.uk (Web), 19/11/2012, Alok Jha
Jan-Emmanuel De Neve of University College London and the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics, said: "Everybody feels intuitively that the individuals who have a sunny disposition have a larger network and more opportunities seem to come their way, they are more likely to rise in an organisation and become a leader in the group. All these things have indirect ways of ending up in higher earnings and there is a direct effect that goes direct to income."
