Foreign student curbs will cost UK billions

Senior figures in higher education have written to the prime minister to warn that the economy stands to lose out on as much as GBP8bn a year due to the government's crackdown on foreign students. The letter has been signed by 68 chancellors, governors and university presidents, including the London School of Economics.

Evidence brought together by the 1994 group in its recent paper "The postgraduate crisis" shows how postgraduate study improves the earnings and employment prospects. The 1994 report also quotes LSE research commissioned by the Sutton Trust showing that those with a master's or PhD earned on average between 15pc and 23pc more respectively over their lives than graduates.
