Election day: the moment of truth for comeback Ken
The Guardian, 03/05/2012, p.1, Hélène Mulholland
Discussing the London Mayoral election Tony Travers, director of the Greater London group at the London School of Economics, says: "You can never say never with Ken but if he loses it would be a terrible personal disappointment and make it difficult to try and make a bid to run as the mayoral candidate in 2016, however much he would want to."

King:I failed over banking collapse
Daily Mail, 03/05/2012, p.2, Becky Barrow
The Bank of England governor sensationally admitted last night that he failed in his duty to help prevent 'the worst recession since the 1930s' and the implosion of the British banking system. He quoted the Queen who asked a professor at the London School of Economics: 'Why did no one see this coming?' Sir Mervyn said the answer was 'extremely simple,' adding: 'No one believed it could happen.

Suu Kyi Takes Her Place
The Wall Street Journal (Europe), 03/05/2012, p.10, James Hookway
Aung San Suu Kyi has taken public office for the first time after nearly a quarter-century of struggling against the country's powerful military elites. "Aung San Suu Kyi's parliamentary debut is neither a gamechanger nor a sign that Burma has reached the tipping point of democratic transition," said Maung Zarni, visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and long-term exile activist.

Livingstone is living in the past, says Labour peer
Evening Standard, 02/05/2012, p.11, Nicholas Cecil
Lord Desai has accused Ken Livingstone of being stuck in the past and lacking the dynamism to be Mayor of London. The frank comments from Lord Desai, an emeritus professor at the London School of Economics, are a bitter blow to Mr Livingstone the day before Londoners go to the polls.

Freedom: the bottom line
Times Higher Education, 03/05/2012, p.28
Commentators often distinguish between "private" universities, such as the University of Buckingham, and the rest, which are lazily thought of as "public". That distinction is increasingly untenable: "the rest" are all legally private, often corporations or, like the London School of Economics, companies limited by guarantee. But Times Higher Education and Grant Thornton's recent analysis of university accounts shows how tenuous the distinction is in terms of finance, too. This has implications for how universities should respond to the government's increasingly forceful attempts to regulate them.
