Spain left on brink by cost of borrowing
The Daily Telegraph, 15/06/2012, p.1, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard
A chorus of economists have exhorted the ECB to cap Spanish and Italian yields at 5pc or so by pledging unlimited intervention. Yet such a naked rescue of insolvent states would trigger legal challenges in the courts for breach of the EU's no-bailout clause. Professor Paul De Graue from the London School of Economics said the bank should go ahead anyway and "let the lawyers argue about it for the next ten years."

Dreaming spires a reality for hard-up Scots students
Daily Express (Scotland)*, 15/06/2012, p.33, Dean Herbert
St Andrews was ranked the sixth best university in the UK. Oxford topped the list, pipping its rival Cambridge to be named Britain's best university. The London School of Economics, Imperial College and Durham made up the rest of the top five.
The Spanish bail-out: Going to extra time
The Economist (16 June 2012)
A key obstacle was that the cajas didn’t have shareholders; they were controlled by a mixture of politicians and depositors. Many cajas were operated by regional barons as development banks that could further their political purposes, says Luis Garicano of the London School of Economics. The cajas boasted that they had survived 200 years. Some, such as those in the Basque country, did indeed look healthier than commercial rivals. But the failure of governance at others was of epic proportions.
