Burma clashes could undermine democracy hopes, says president
The Guardian, 11/06/2012, p.12, Francis Wade
Racial and religious tension is not new in Arakan, which sits on the border with Bangladesh and has Burma's highest concentration of Muslims. But the current violence is the worst in a decade and state media yesterday warned of anarchy unless calm prevails. Maung Zarni, a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, said the nominally civilian government could benefit from the unrest.

BBC to quiz candidates for top job over the fallout from its jubilee coverage fiasco
The Observer, 10/06/2012, p.11, Maggie Brown
ED RICHARDS 46, chief executive, Ofcom A graduate of the London School of Economics and Harvard Business School, Richards's direct TV experience was restricted to working as a researcher in 1988-89. He advised Gordon Brown from 1990-92 and was controller of corporate strategy for the BBC from1995-99 before joining Tony Blair at No 10 as special adviser preparing for the 2001 election. He helped to draft the Communications Act 2003, setting up Ofcom. He became Ofcom's chief executive in 2006, and played a key role in the abandoned BSkyB bid.

A Brussels tax will set the war clock ticking
The Sunday Times, 10/06/2012, p.18, Dominic Lawson
Economists are not held in high esteem these days - when the Queen, on a visit to the London School of Economics, asked why none of them had predicted the credit crunch, she put her finger on a very sore spot. Yet when economists do make grim warnings, they are denounced as alarmist. Sometimes, though, alarmist is the most rational thing to be, however much it causes the seer to be shunned in polite society.

Spanish bailout deal emerges
The Guardian, 09/06/2012, p.1, Giles Tremlett; Ian Traynor
Experts said Rajoy's attempts to wriggle out of external control of Spain's economy were doomed to failure. "The terms and conditions are going to want to see a clear path to restore growth and structural budget balance. That will include structural reforms and fiscal measures," said Luis Garicano, of the London School of Economics. "But I guess they will try to find a face-saving way of doing this."

The author, the academy - and the empty purse

The Independent, 09/06/2012, p.33, Unattributed
Orlando Patterson was in his youth a brave and gifted novelist: he discussed his The Children of Sisyphus (1964), one of the first works to take Rastafarians seriously - before Bob Marley's cult (pictured), when the dreadlocked rebels were a "disgrace to the nation". Patterson also recalled early days at the LSE.

Facing the group of debt

Metro (Scotland)*, 08/06/2012, p.12, Unattributed
But what if this summer's Euros were not about dodgy penalty decisions or long-range shots that had clearly crossed the line? What if the tournament was based instead on less sexy but equally important criteria, such as the rate of unemployment, gross domestic product and public debt? In a Euros v Eurozone special, Metro has called upon the expertise of Albrecht Ritschl, a football fan and professor in economic history at the London School of Economics, to take us through the draw based on financial sheets, not team sheets.
