Bonuses 'should remain frozen until retirement.'
The Daily Telegraph, 24/07/2012, p.2, Roland Gribben
Bonus payments to City bosses will be frozen until they have either retired or left the company, if proposals in the Kay Report on reforming the UK equity markets are accepted. The report's author, Prof John Kay of the London School of Economics, sees little merit in annual bonuses and would prefer to see executives build up a retirement pot. He said: "We don't pay politicians bonuses, we don't pay surgeons bonuses. If we did, it wouldn't affect how hard they work, but it would affect the way in which they work."

Al-Qaeda blamed as more than 100 die in wave of co-ordinated violence
The Times, 24/07/2012, p.25, Deborah Haynes
At least 108 people were killed and more than twice that number wounded in a co-ordinated wave of bombings and shootings in Iraq yesterday, the worst outbreak of violence in more than two years. A policy by Nouri al-Maliki, the Prime Minister, to issue arrest warrants for senior Sunni politicians and exert control over the security and intelligence services would have fed the discontent felt by Iraq's Sunni minority and hampered the Government's ability to gather information on terrorist plots, Toby Dodge, of the London School of Economics, said.

Revisiting a one-child law
International Herald Tribune, 24/07/2012, p.2, Edward Wong
Mayling Birney, a scholar at the London School of Economics and Political Science who is studying the evaluation system, said many local officials say the population control quota remains among the so-called one-veto criteria for promotion and is about as significant a goal as maintaining stability or growing the local economy.
