System coped under pressure, but flaws were exposed
The Guardian, 04/07/2012, p.15, Tim Newburn
Three thousand people have now appeared in court in connection with last August's riots. Partly as a result of arrests made during the disturbances, and largely as a consequence of the widespread availability of CCTV and other identification evidence, magistrates' and crown courts have faced a sudden and sizeable influx of extra work. Tim Newburn is professor of social policy and criminology at the LSE.

A step at last in the right direction
Financial Times, 04/07/2012, p.13, Martin Wolf
The decision to let the rescue funds buy government debt is even less meaningful and could prove destructive, as Paul de Grauwe at the London School of Economics, argues.

'Printing money' is damaging economy, Bank warned
The Times, 04/07/2012, p.39, Kathryn Hopkins
Charles Goodhart has called on the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee to stop its quantitative easing programme because it is damaging the economy. Professor Goodhart, of the London School of Economics and a member of The Times' Shadow MPC, said that instead it should cut interest rates to 0.25 per cent, from lows of 0.5 per cent, and start buying private sector bonds, as opposed to gilts.

Happiness is medalling in Olymp-o-nomics
The Guardian, 04/07/2012, p.3, Marina Hyde
Speaking of reports, an unfortunate synchronicity sees Lloyds unleash their "research" at the same moment that the London School of Economics releases some of its own. Conducted on behalf of the charity Elizabeth Finn Care, the LSE's preliminary findings concern the Olympic borough of Newham, where unemployment has risen at more than twice the rate that it has in the rest of London since 2005, when the Games were awarded.

Libor needs swift modernisation to recapture trust
City AM, 03/07/2012, p.17, Tom Kirchmaier
WE SHOULD be under no illusion about how catastrophic the failure of the Libor rate setting mechanisms has been. There has been widespread manipulation of the most important price of risk. And we don't need reminding how important the price mechanism is for the allocation of everything from goods to services, and of course capital. Dr Tom Kirchmaier is lecturer in business economics and strategy at Manchester Business School and a fellow of the Financial Markets Group at LSE.
