Clegg appeals to peers not to reject new welfare Bill
The Daily Telegraph, 23/01/2012, p.2, Christopher Hope
The government is readying itself for defeat in the Lords over plans to cap welfare payments paid to a single household at GBP26, 000 a year and Deputy PM Nick Clegg has hinted that concessions could be offered to peers to persuade them not to reject the move. In a speech at the LSE, shadow work and pensions secretary Liam Byrne will say the benefits bill was set to rise by GBP5.5bn a year, indicating that the government’s welfare-to-work strategy was failing because 'quite simply, there isn't enough work to go around'.

Great haul of China
The Daily Mirror, 23/01/2012, p.8, Graham Hiscott
China's recent trading boom has created a reported 960,000 millionaires and many of the newly wealthy are flocking to Britain to spend on luxury goods made by companies such as Louis Vuitton. The LSE's Professor Danny Quah says China's rising income will continue to power economic growth in the world, over that of the US or Western Europe and if the UK hitches its fortunes to those countries no longer growing, it will 'lag even further behind'.

Pressure builds in U.K. over high executive pay
International Herald Tribune, 23/01/2012, p.15, Julia Werdigier
In the past two months, Fidelity Worldwide Investment and the Association of British Insurers, two of the UK's largest investors, have expressed disapproval with excessive levels of executive pay and have called for shareholders to be given more say in the compensation. Recent research for the Institute for Public Policy Research showed that total average pay for British chief executives rose by 33pc in 2010, while average company market values increased by 24pc, while an LSE study revealed that a 10pc increase in a company's market value resulted in an increase of 3pc in the chief executive’s pay, but only a 0.2pc increase in the salary of the average worker.

New gilded ages are flowering even as millions yearn for basics
International Herald Tribune, 23/01/2012, p.1, Chrystia Freeland
Comment. Globalisation, technological development and the emergence of the BRIC economies has wrought a change to the global economy which has seen the BRIC's entering their first plutocracy and 'golden age', while the West revisits this phenomenon for the second time. One result has been economic pressure on the West's middle-classes, and according to John Van Reenan, head of the Centre for Economic Performance at the LSE, related tensions which have been building for years have been exacerbated by the economic crisis.

Labour needs a woman's touch
The Daily Mirror, 21/01/2012, p.13, Tony Parsons
Comment. In an evaluation of the potential of Labour leader Ed Miliband, the writer, while believing it is unlikely that he 'will ever fill this country with euphoria and hope and optimism', also acknowledges the worth of his 'unique background' in managing the rare feat of leaving a comprehensive school and entering Oxford, Harvard and the LSE.
