International Herald Tribune, 06/12/2012, p. 1, Rachel Donadio ; Liz Alderman
The result, analysts say, is a lack of competition that undermines the economy by allowing the magnates to run cartels and enrich themselves through crony capitalism. “That makes it rational for them to form a close, incestuous relationship with politicians and the media, which is then highly vulnerable to corruption,” said Kevin Featherstone, a professor of European Politics at the London School of Economics.

The lecturers who don't teach (but still count)
Times Higher Education, 06/12/2012
At the University of Oxford, where there were 10.8 students per academic member, "teaching" staff devoted only 25 per cent of their time to teaching, according to Trac. At Imperial College London the figure was 21 per cent and at the London School of Economics it was 22 per cent. At universities in the Russell Group, which have "some of the lowest student-staff ratios in UK universities" according to a report released by the group in October, the figure was 23.7 per cent on average (Trac 2008-09).

Oil and troubled waters
Times Higher Education, 06/12/2012
