Top universities reject 'upgrade' students
The Daily Telegraph, 20/08/2012, p.6, Unattributed
UNIVERSITIES have been accused of failing to let students who received better than expected A-level results change to courses at other institutions. As of Friday however, only 353 people had been awarded places on the adjustment scheme. Leading higher education institutions, including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and the London School of Economics, were said to have turned down potential applicants.

Whether Ms Suu Kyi will heed calls to use her influence in stemming the violence is difficult to predict. "Politically, Aung San Suu Kyi has absolutely nothing to gain from opening her mouth on this," Maung Zarni, a Burma expert and visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, told the Associated Press.

Could Britain Work Harder
The Sunday Times, 19/08/2012, p.5, Kathryn Cooper
What economists really think of Osborne In February 2010, 20 senior economists wrote a letter to this newspaper backing the Conservative party's deficit reduction strategy, in what would become a turning point in the run-up to the general election in May 2010. The other signatories of the letter included Tim Besley, Charles Goodhart, Albert Marcet and Christopher Pissarides of the London School of Economics.
Oldfield gets in deep with the Oxford Union
The Sunday Telegraph, 19/08/2012, p.13, Tim Walker
“ALTHOUGH ONE would have imagined that the Oxford Union would symbolise everything that Trenton Oldfield, pictured, would despise, the "anti-elitism campaigner", who caused havoc at the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, quietly accepted an invitation to address it. "We were quite close to getting him," says John Lee, the president of the Union. "He apparently can't speak in public before his court hearing, at least that is what he told me." Oldfield, 35, who was educated at the GBP15,000-ayear Sydney Church of England Grammar School, and then the London School of Economics, is, however, expected to go on trial on September 24.”

One in five jailed rioters let out of prison early
guardian.co.uk (Web), 18/08/2012, Unattributed
Keir Starmer QC, the director of public prosecutions, said the speed with which rioters and looters were brought before the courts was far more powerful in preventing re-offending than the severity of sentences. The joint Guardian and London School of Economics project Reading the Riots found most prosecutors in contrast to Starmer fully endorsed the sentencing approach by judges that saw rioters receive an average sentence of 16.8 months, making the penalties four-and-a-half times longer than the average jail term for similar offences in 2010.
