The school revolution in England: a progress report, two years on
The Guardian, 11/04/2012, p.10, Jeevan Vasagar
The landscape of education in England is changing fast, and the pace of change has accelerated since the coalition came to power nearly two years ago. Research by Stephen Machin and James Vernoit of the LSE found that Labour's academies - which were formerly failing schools - experienced a "significant increase" in GCSE performance due to the conversion. This held true even after controlling for the fact that they attracted pupils of higher ability after the change of status.
We inspired boat race swimmer to stick his oar in, says college head
Evening Standard, 10/04/2012, p.29, Simon Freeman
The head of Bradfield College in Sydney, where boat race protester Trenton Oldfield formed his "anti-elitist" philosophy leapt to his defence today. Oldfield moved to the UK in 2001 where he enrolled at the LSE, completing an MSc in Contemporary Urbanism before setting up an arts charity called This Is Not A Gateway with his girlfriend Deepa Naik.
The boat race protester knew his real power
Evening Standard, 10/04/2012, p.15, Sarah Sands
Comment on the disruption of the Boat Race by Trenton Oldfield. The writer answers media challenges to his behaviour based on his privileged background by claiming that 'his Left-wing beliefs are perfectly likely to be because he was a student of the excellent LSE, not despite it'.
Freud knew what motivated the privileged class warriors
The Independent, 10/04/2012, p.16, Dominic Lawson
Comment on the 'class warrior' credentials claimed by such as Trenton Oldfield, who disrupted the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race recently. The writer asserts that to the millions of people to whom Oldfield's former university, the LSE, is just as remote from their own lives as Oxford and Cambridge, his claim of radical differences between the former and two latter institutions 'would be seen as meaningless - if not preposterous'.
Anti-elitism led by the privileged

MI6 AND A £1M 'BRIBE' TO SILENCE TORTURE VICTIM
Daily Mail, 10/04/2012, p.1, Tim Shipman
SIR Mark Allen was the spy who brought Gaddafi in from the cold. He was MI6's chief Arabist at the time of Labour's love-in with the tyrant, and paved the way for Tony Blair to visit the dictator in Tripoli in 2004. The 61-year-old is on the advisory board of the LSE.
Swim loony a spoilsport
The Sun, 10/04/2012, p.39, Unattributed
Letters on swimmer Trenton Oldfield's disruption of the Boat Race. One correspondent, says that the graduate in contemporary urbanism from the LSE 'protests against what he calls elitism because of a deep-rooted envy for people who are obviously far more intelligent than he can ever hope to be, despite his own privileged education' and claims that our doctors and scientists do not come from the LSE.
It's not just the [...]
The Guardian, 10/04/2012, p.31, Luke Harding
Comment. Ever since the controversy caused by the LSE accepting cash from Colonel Gaddafi, universities have grown cautious about involvement with dictators. Cambridge University's Churchill College has suspended plans to award a "Nazarbayev fellowship", named after Kazakhstan's 71-year-old president, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Stop twisting our research for your purposes
The Guardian, 10/04/2012, p.37, Stephen Machin
The coalition's academy programme is not the same as Labour's, so why is our old research being used to support them, asks Stephen Machin. In research carried out with my colleague, James Vernoit at the centre for economic performance at LSE, we conducted an evaluation of Labour's academies programme.

Class war mars boat race on the Thames
International Herald Tribune, 10/04/2012, p.4, John F. Burns
Rumination on the 'class war' marring the annual Boat Race includes the comment that the 'class warrior', Trenton Oldfield, 'is himself the product of an elite British university', the LSE, though admittedly this institution includes many prominent leftists as alumni.

The Times, 09/04/2012, p.9, David Sanderson
The chairman of the British Olympic Association, Lord Moynihan, said it was impossible for the security operation at the London Games to completely remove the risk of disruption of events by the kind of lone protester who disrupted the University boat race at the weekend. Trenton Oldfield attended the London School of Economics.
