Move over book club, cakes cut it now
The Times, 14/04/2011, p.10, Nick Wyke
More people are baking than ever before, with sales of home baking goods up 12pc in the past year and cake decoration sales up 15pc. Hannah Woods, a welfare adviser at London School of Economics, says: "There's something very idealistic about baking that's associated with kindness and friendship. I remember my nan telling me how her friends and neighbours had all saved a bit of their rations each week to contribute to her wedding cake."

Diversity, Oxford and disadvantage
The Guardian, 14/04/2011, p.31, Unattributed
Several correspondents write on Oxford University and the issue of diversity. Dr Barbara Harrell-Bond, director of the Fahamu Refugee Programme, notes the number of Africans the university has recruited as staff. The second of these was Chaloka Beyani, Crown Prince of Jordan fellow, who is currently senior lecturer in law at the LSE. http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2011/apr/14/diversity-access-oxford|

It is noted that LSE professor of social policy Jane Lewis will be 61 today.

How do you get full marks for happiness?
Evening Standard, 13/04/2011, p.15, Richard Godwin
Comment. LSE economist Richard Layard says that despite 50 years of economic growth, most members of British society remain far from happy and that the remedy for this is cultural change 'away from a culture of selfishness and materialism'. The subject of well-being in society is a subject to have been approached by David Cameron recently and yesterday saw the formation of Action for Happiness, a group dedicated to propagating happiness. The topic id discussed here. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23941015-how-do-you-get-full-marks-for-happiness.do|

A meeting of minds with the Maya of Guatemala
Telegraph (Web), 13/04/2011, Unattributed
Some people might knock Tom Hart's beliefs as airy-fairy, New Age posturings. Its certainly hard, listening to him, to imagine the life he once led a Northern Irish student at the London School of Economics, later a political researcher and opinion poll analyst, who dealt with facts first and emotions afterwards
