'What's What?' An Evening with Bernard Shaw

ReCollect: creative explorations of the LSE, brings to life Shaw's personality and wit, his era and links to the LSE, through a multimedia promenade performance. Combining live drama, film and sound, the show will move across campus with an audience in tow, connecting a range of Shaw's works on such pertinent topics as democracy, politics and money.

The show has been created by Heather Barnett, an artist and visiting fellow at LSE, and Dr Gwen Sasse, Senior Lecturer in the LSE's European Institute/Department of Government. They met in December 2006 and discovered a shared interest in the life and work of one of LSE's founders, Bernard Shaw, and in using unconventional ways of engaging a wider LSE community. The performance includes a selection of letters written by Shaw and the Webbs, scenes from the plays 'On the Rocks' and 'Geneva' and an excerpt from 'The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism'.

Heather said: 'This is a first for LSE in many respects. ReCollect aims to explore the school's history through the arts and the creative involvement of LSE communities. What's What is the perfect opportunity to do this; we have LSE students and staff involved both on stage and behind the scenes, as well as young professional actors, including a former LSE student, Vera Filitova.'

Gwen said: 'I've taught here for 8 years and have often wondered how many people around LSE know about the beginnings of the School. Our promenade performance brings out the continuing relevance of the themes explored in Shaw's wide-ranging literary and political work, especially his critical and often satirical take on modern society.'

Into the Light: the photography of Bernard Shaw

The performance is accompanied by an exhibition of intriguing images from the little known Shaw photography archive at LSE. From images of literary and political contemporaries to nude self-portraits, the exhibition shows Shaw to be as prolific and diverse a photographer as he was a writer. (A limited edition book will follow on from the exhibition later in the year.)

The exhibition runs from 17 April - 4 May. Free admission. Open Monday to Friday, 10am - 6pm, The Atrium Gallery, Student Service Centre, Old Building.
