The transportation of birds provides an effective vector for transmitting bird flu and efforts to contain the disease in Indonesia have attempted to halt this trade. Local demand, however, far outstrips local desire for disease containment. Every day millions of birds cross myriad internal borders of Indonesia – between provinces, districts, sub-districts and villages. These birds have come to Aceh from Medan, the largest city in northern Sumatra.
