"Wide expanses of open terrain dominate upper Tibet, yet pilgrims travel by performing prostrations, lying full-out on the ground repeatedly. They cover 3-5 miles per day, risking exposure to weather and altitude, safety from vehicle traffic, and poverty. Theirs is a profound perseverance."
