Tibetan Pilgrims Cross High Snowy Plateau

Tibetan Pilgrims Cross High Snowy Plateau_476x319

This picture was submitted by Sally Walkerman, a graduate student in the Anthropology Department.

How the photo relates to the theme of 'risk':

"Wide expanses of open terrain dominate upper Tibet, yet pilgrims travel by performing prostrations, lying full-out on the ground repeatedly. They cover 3-5 miles per day, risking exposure to weather and altitude, safety from vehicle traffic, and poverty. Theirs is a profound perseverance."
