Social networks based on familial and communal ties provide crucial material and psychological support in Kyrgyz society. Poverty has made it difficult to maintain social relationships. Many people do not have money to pay for transportation to visit relatives and friends, to buy gifts, organise traditional feasts and contribute to weddings or funerals.
