LSE Arts Public Exhibition

Dates: 26 January - 20 February 2015
Time: 10am-8pm, Mon-Fri
Venue: Atrium Gallery, Old Building

The Urban Lightscapes/Social Nightscapes exhibition showcased a five-day lighting design workshop that took place on Peabody’s Whitecross estate in October 2014. This exhibition presented the impressive night-time photography that was produced during the workshop as well as sketches, drawings and materials from the various design processes and the final lighting design ideas. It premiered a film documentary that was produced on the project as well as exhibit the lighting fixtures the design teams worked with throughout the week.

Organized by the LSE Cities research programme Configuring Light/Staging the Social in collaboration with Peabody’s IMPROVE project and the Social Light Movement and funded by LSE HEIF5 funding, the workshop brought together lighting design professionals, architects, planners and social scientists.

Focus of the workshop was the creation of new lighting design interventions to help improve the outdoor spaces on the estate. During the workshop week, five design teams worked closely with LSE researchers to understand the Whitecross estate as a social space and interact with residents and other stakeholders in order to come up with sensible public lighting ideas. These new lighting ideas were presented to Peabody and the public in a symposium that took place at LSE on 17 October 2014. Technical sponsorship for this project has kindly been provided by iGuzzini.

This is a UNESCO International Year of Light event.
