Between East and West

LSE Arts Public Exhibition

Dates: Monday 23 February - Wednesday 1 April 2015*
Time: 10am-8pm, Mon-Fri.
Venue: Atrium Gallery, OId Building

Between East and West is a free exhibition exploring the heritage and identity of the British Chinese through photographic portraits, archival imagery and Oral History interviews by Mike Tsang.

The British Born Chinese is a group of diverse individuals originating from Chinese diasporas before making their home in Britain. Some of them have families that journeyed to the UK directly from China and Hong Kong during waves of immigration from the 1950's onwards. Others have families who settled in other sizeable populations of overseas Chinese such as Malaysia, Singapore and beyond before eventually emigrating to the UK. But these individuals of the Second Generation have at times been uncertain of their identity as they straddle the values and cultures of East and West, half set in each yet not fully grounded in either. Here are their stories of growing up in the UK with lives intertwined with Chinese heritage, a record of this community that will serve to document a vital part of Britain’s modern society.

*The exhibition was be closed from 6-8pm on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 24 Feb
  • Monday 9 March
  • Wednesday 11 March
