The Truth about the Office

The latest exhibition in LSE's Atrium is a series of lithographs and related objects addressing work.

The Truth about the Office is an exhibition by Dr Rebecca Tunstall, a lecturer in housing in the Department of Social Policy, who also graduated this year with an MA in printmaking from the Camberwell School of Art.

She said: 'Work is a daily preoccupation for most people, and an intellectual and policy issue of great interest to many at LSE, but a neglected subject for art. Millions of people, including myself at times, feel ambivalent about work. Most want neither merely to work to live, nor to live to work, but it is difficult for individuals and societies to get the balance right.

'Work changes round us, so in just two generations 'needlework' has become an obscure leisure activity, while 'paperwork' has moved from office to home, and now is supposed to be about to disappear. Meanwhile, we gradually weave the fabric of our working lives through the repetitive and often-thwarted aspirations of lists of things 'to do'.'

The exhibition also includes related exhibits in the Atrium cabinet. In addition, Becky added: 'After a trip to the Isle of Wight this year, I became interested in the global rise of plastic-bottled water. The bottles featured in the display were all collected at LSE.'

The exhibition also includes items in the Atrium cabinet about work, including plastic water bottles. Becky added: 'After a trip to the Isle of Wight this year, I made a book reflecting the global rise of plastic-bottled water. The bottles featured in the display were all collected at LSE.'

All works are for sale, at prices from £5 to £150 (including frames). For more information, email: r.tunstall@lse.ac.uk|.

Rebecca Tunstall| has also shown her work in the New London Printmakers group show in Gallery J, Japan, in May 2006; in the Proof group show, the Kingsgate Gallery, London, in February 2006; and in the Hackney Open group show, London, in June 2005.
