Parliaments constitute foundational buildings in nearly all democracies, to the point where they often embody the entire polity. The U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., has been growing and changing in a way that mirrors that of the U.S. itself. Modest at first, it has received elaborate additions alongside extensive renovations. This fountain and glass ceiling, added in 2008, contrast with the repairs taking place on the dome, underlining the past and present identities of both the Capitol and the U.S. as a whole.
