This picture was taken by Francisco B. González Centeno, a postgraduate student from the Department of Sociology. It was taken at Dolmabahce Palace, Istanbul in June, 2011.
I took this picture near the main entrance of the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul. The two photographed soldiers are committed to guard the Palace where the last Sultan lived until Atatürk's revolution in 1923. As the soldier that is guarding the portcullis cannot move, the other soldier needs to clean his face. The care from one soldier to another caught my attention, since one can observe in the scene the implied ideas of masculine sexuality, war, nation and defence.
