06 Silence's Sanctuary

Silences Sanctuary

This picture was taken by Rochelle Burgess, a postgraduate student from the Department of Social Psychology. It was taken in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa in 2008.

On a sunrise game drive during a break from field work in 2008, I captured these antelope returning to graze in fields freshly deserted by nocturnal predators. The silence was omnipresent, and though unsettling in certain contexts, in this instance, silence symbolized a crossing from night to morning, from danger to security.
