12 Samburu Warrior

Samburu Warrior

This picture was taken by Antonia Savvides a undergraduate student from the Department of Anthropology. It was taken on 18 September 2010 in Mombasa.

This is a picture a Samburu warrior after the performance of a traditional Samburu jumping dance for tourists. Young Samburu men are trained to jump incredibly high from a very young age. The dance is used to attract wives and demonstrate strength and agility. It is believed the higher the jumper, the closer the warrior is to God, 'Enkai'.  I took this picture because I was fascinated by the intricacy, elaborateness and colour in Samburu attire.
