This picture was taken by Coline Houssais, a postgraduate student from the Department of International Relations. It was taken on February 10 2010, in Marsa, Malta.
I took this picture while on mission in Malta. We got to visit open centres hosting asylum seekers who illegally arrive in Malta in dinghy little Libyan boats. There, they try to organize themselves and launch little businesses located in the centre. This picture of a migrant-managed grocery with the reflection of a Maltese immigration official summarizes their situation: on the one hand they want to start a new life here but on the other hand, their dreams could be cut short if their asylum application is rejected.
The next image in this month's perspectives is Mount Saleve 2.|
