This photo was taken by Pawel Opaska, a catering assistant with the LSE Catering Services. It was taken in one of the small villages in Madagascar on the route between Antananarivo and Tamatave.
After cycling in the south of the country, we turned north and left Antananarivo towards Tamatave. It was late August 2010 and almost every day, tropical downpours were hitting us with full force. We tried to find shelter whenever it was possible - sometimes in little abandoned stalls, sometimes in the villages and sometimes under the roofs of simple huts. Local people were great and never refused to help; in their children we evoked curiosity - two pale-skin people, speaking a strange language and travelling on fully loaded bikes. The girl on the photo was one of them - a bit shy at first, but smiling like others after few moments.
