This picture was taken by Pawel Opaska, a catering assistant with the LSE Catering Services. It was taken in Bukittingi, Sumatra, Indonesia, in February 2008.
Being on a one month visa and travelling by bicycle, we didn't have enough time to go for a trek to observe orangutans in their natural habitat so we decided to visit the zoo in Bukittingi instead. While we were watching very sad-looking orangutans, a group of children on a school trip appeared. Some of them started to throw peanuts towards the animal and he tried to catch them. From our perspective it looked like the orangutan tried to reach out to the freedom they had, freedom he had lost for ever.
