'On the 4th of July, before the annual American celebrations of fireworks were scheduled to begin, the harbour at San Francisco appeared to wait patiently in the fog as the sun set behind the hills, with the water so serene, as if it were catching a moment of rest before the city would awaken to a sky filled with fireworks.'
