April 26, 1986: Danger and Disillusion

This photo was taken by Knut Magnus Koren, an MSc student in the European Institute. This photo was taken in Chernobyl, Ukraine.

'Being in Chernobyl 20 years after the disaster made an unforgettable impression on me. The destructive potential of nuclear power hit those committed to its peaceful exploitation the hardest; it rendered the Soviet-style top modern city built a few years earlier to shelter the employees of the power plant and their families a ghost town. The disaster both exposed the danger of nuclear technology and was disillusive to those who still had faith in Soviet Communism.'
