Pruning Mango

This photo was taken by Professor Sylvia Chant, Professor of Development Geography. This photo was taken in Fajara, Gambia.

'The pruner -Lamin Sanneh - is the eldest son of a marabout ('wizard'/ 'wise man'), and is said to possess magical powers. Before scaling the tree with his 'jassey' (cutlass), he says prayers and smokes a concoction of 'jamba' (marijuana) and tobacco. I took this picture because I could not imagine climbing 100 feet with so little in the way of safety measures and have absolute trust that this man would survive as well as succeed with the task in hand.'
