Services and monitoring

UK first class: to arrive at its destination within 48 hours or if sent on a Saturday by the following Tuesday.

UK second class: to arrive at its destination within 3 days.

The Post Office operates a first and second class inland postal service. The School's postage bill is high and staff are requested to use the second class service wherever possible. Any mail sent via the Post Room will be posted second class, unless the words 'FIRST CLASS' are written clearly on the top left hand corner of the item.

Guaranteed next day delivery: to guarantee an item to a UK destination before 1pm next day.

Recorded delivery: means an item must be signed for on arrival. We do not recommend Recorded delivery for overseas packages, as it is not always possible to track them.

Air mail: all mail going overseas (including EIRE) will go by spring global mail| unless otherwise stated by the sender. | unless otherwise stated by the sender.

Strikes: In the event of a strike by royal mail the post room requests that departments try and get as much mail out before the strike occurs or wait until the strike ends as we do not have the room to store mail whilst the strike is in operation.

The post room will use couriers for very important items during a strike period but we ask departments to bear in mind these services will be stretched due to the obvious increased demand.

Internal Mail: the post room will endeavour to deliver to departments between 10 and 11am for morning post and 2 and 3pm for afternoon post, if this isn't possible for any reason we will let the departments concerned know as soon as possible.

Internal correspondence for members of staff should be addressed with the name, department and room number of the addressee, as given in the internal telephone directory.

A facsimile machine is located in Room K55. Messages can be sent throughout the normal working day. Incoming messages will be logged and distributed along with the normal internal postal service.

Monitoring post:

Royal Mail 1st and 2nd Class post from UK and Overseas – the amount of post coming into the post room from Royal Mail every morning is weighed.

Couriers - Every courier delivery whether from a worldwide company or by hand courier is scanned into a database and then this helps us monitor how much incoming mail is by courier each day/month/year.

Royal Mail 1st Class and 2nd Class UK - we monitor small letters through our franking machine and large letter and parcels through the daily count which is recorded on a docket which goes off to Royal Mail each day.

Royal Mail Overseas - this is monitored by weight of bags that are filled up and sent off every day. Royal Mail Recorded and Next Day - We monitor this by writing down each piece of post sent in a daily log book, which we keep a copy of and then send the other copy to Royal Mail. - We monitor this by writing down each piece of post sent in a daily log book, which we keep a copy of and then send the other copy to Royal Mail.

What isn't monitored?

Internal post between departments is not monitored but apart from that all incoming post from outside LSE and outgoing post to Royal Mail or DHL post is monitored in one way or another and we will continue to do so to improve our service levels by appreciating when the busy periods are and preparing for them.
