Terms of reference

  1. To implement equitable, transparent and efficient procedures for:

    1. identifying and appointing the School's academic officers and relevant committee chairmanships;

    2. appointing members of the academic staff to School committees where the agreed processes of nomination have not provided members. In those cases where no nominations are received for vacancies on particular committees, the Vice-Chairman of the Academic Board and the Secretary of the Academic Nominations Committee, acting on behalf of the Academic Nominations Committee, shall generate names randomly from an electronic database of all eligible candidates;

    3. conferring full Academic Board membership on members of the research staff with substantial and continuing teaching responsibilities.

  2.  To appoint the Deans and the chairs of relevant academic committees.

  3. To establish a committee for the selection of the Vice-Chairman of the Academic Board, and to endorse the recommendation of that committee prior to its submission to the Academic Board. The selection committee shall comprise the Deputy Director (Teaching and Learning), two academic members of the Academic Nominations Committee other than the current Vice-Chairman of the Academic Board, and a representative of the Academic Board, and shall be chaired by one of the Academic Nominations Committee members.

  4. To fill vacancies on School committees for which the Academic Board is the appointing authority.

  5. To co-ordinate long- term succession planning for academic offices and committee memberships.
