Chaplain and Interfaith Adviser
Revd Dr James Walters

Jim is Chaplain to the School and oversees the work of the LSE Faith Centre. He provides pastoral care to students and members of staff and supports religious life and cohesion within the wider LSE community. Before ordination Jim worked as a parliamentary assistant to a Member of Parliament and he writes regularly on politics, philosophy and theology. His book on theology and social theory, Baudrillard and Theology, was published in 2012 with Bloomsbury.

The Chaplain is available to speak confidentially to any student or member of staff regardless of religious affiliation.

Faith Centre Coordinator
Jacob Phillips

Jacob works with the Chaplain in coordinating the work of the LSE Faith Centre, focusing on interfaith events and activities. He graduated from Heythrop College, before going to King’s College London to undertake an MA, and is now nearing completion on his PhD. He writes on various matters related to interfaith encounter, theology and the academy. His academic profile is viewable here|

Chair of the Faith Centre Advisory Board
Professor Janet Hartley

Janet was the pro-director who first envisaged the LSE Faith Centre and she has been a constant advocate for its work. She chairs the advisory board of alumni who support Faith Centre activities with advice and fundraising.


Associate Chaplains

Roman Catholic Chaplain
Fr. José Manuel

Fr. Jose Sebastiao Manuel is a Dominican priest from Angola and the Roman Catholic Chaplain at LSE. He helped create the Dominican Mosaiko Cultural Centre (now Mosaiko-Institute for Citizenship) which works for the promotion and protection of human rights. Fr. Jose has been its Director for more than fourteen years and is now studying law in London in order to help defend the rights of the more than two thirds of the population of Angola whose lives have been destroyed by forty years of war. He is combining his studies with his associate role at LSE. 



Orthodox Chaplain
Fr. Alexander Fostiropoulos

Alexander is our Orthodox chaplain. He is a priest of the Deanery of Great Britain and Ireland, of the Archdiocese of Orthodox Parishes of Russian Tradition in Western Europe, within the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. He came to England in 1971 and trained as an architect in London. He was ordained priest by the late Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh in 1985, and has been at King's ever since. He is also a Chaplain to the LSE.

Jewish Chaplain
Rabbi Gavin Broder

Gavin (nicknamed Rav Gav by popular student demand!) can be found giving regular lunch and learn sessions at the centre and on campus. He is available for one-on-one chats, learning, welfare support, or to just grab a coffee, orange juice or pint! (Often providing snacks.) He represents Jewish causes within universities and is there for students of all backgrounds and affiliations. Rav Gav works with the Jewish Society and UJS helping to support and run student events.
