Cycling and Walking to LSE

Walking to LSE

Walking is a great way to get around central London. LSE Halls are all within walking distance of campus and easy instructions are available on the Accommodation webpages. See Transport for London for more about walking around London.

Cycling at LSE

London can be a daunting place to take to the saddle, but there's plenty of help out there to get you started. Riding a bike is good for your health, good for the environment, cost effective and fun!

There are many facilities for cyclist on campus including 10 shower units. Please see   the Transport Facilities Guide webpage for a map with the exact location of facilities.

Cycle Storage

On the campus there are 342 open access and 102 indoor cycle parking spaces with access restricted to LSE students and staff only. These facilities are monitored by the LSE Security CCTV. Please call Security on 020 7955 6200 should you need assistance. All LSE halls of residence also have cycle parking facilities.

Bike Maintenance Stations

Bike maintenance stations are available for LSE students and staff to fix their own bikes on campus. They contain secured bike tools and a pump, as well as a stand to support the bike for easy repairs. All repairs you make to your bike are at your own risk – so make sure you don’t lose any of those little screws!

There are two bike maintenance stations, located in the secure cycle storage areas in the NAB basement, and the Towers basement.

The bike maintenance stations project was financed through the LSE Sustainable Projects Fund and led by LSE student Oliver Lyasght, a keen cyclist. Find out more about the SPF by visiting their website.

Cycling Survey Report

In summer 2015, a survey of LSE staff and students was conducted to understand their views on cycling in and around the School. The findings of this survey are presented in this Cycling Survey Report. Disclaimer: the report was produced by a volunteer group of LSE staff and student cyclists, with advice from the LSE Estates Division. While the report does not necessarily represent the views of LSE, the School will collaborate to address the issues highlighted to provide the best cycling facilities possible for the LSE community.

Finding your way

You can plan a quiet route to LSE by ordering a free map from Transport for London. The maps have been designed by cyclists for cyclists and identify routes with cycle lanes and less traffic.

You can also use the bicycle icon on google maps and the Transport for London journey planner to work out the best way to go. There's more information about getting to LSE on the Transport Facilities Guide webpage.

Getting a bike

LSE operate a cyclescheme for staff which can save staff 33% on the cost of a new bike.

The Santander Cycle Hire Scheme have docking stations on Houghton Street, Sardinia Street and Portugal Street. The bikes are available for 24 hours a day and are great for short journeys around central London.

Cycle Safety

The London Cycling Campaign have loads of great resources for cyclists, including advice on insurance, maintaining your bike and cycle safety.

Westminster Council offer free Cycle Confident training to boost your confidence and get you cycling safely.
