St Clement's Restack Works

Project Update

The St Clement's Restack Works contractor, Vinci Facilities Ltd have been appointed and started on 26th May 2015.

The works are essentially to empty out the East end of the St Clement's Building and to isolate the services to the East side of the building to enable it to be disconnected from the West side so it can be demolished.

The Stage 1 plan (pdf) indicates the access changes from 15th June, cut lines and when they are due to be taking place.

Some departments have already been relocated, freeing up space in the West end to allow some of the occupants in the East to move to the empty rooms in the West. These rooms will be used to consolidate the remaining departments. Due to Media and Comms space not being ready to move into until the end of October 2015, they will remain on the 1st floor until then. This has resulted in interim moves for some people before their final move and we have worked with the Departmental Managers to agree these.

Other than the works for the adaptation of offices to accommodate Geography and Sociology departments, the works will also include;

  1. A new internal fire escape staircase, basement to 6th floor.
  2. New toilet provisions including disabled toilets to ensure adequate provisions are in place
  3. Enhancement of the remaining entrances with new signage
  4. Some PC teaching space retention
  5. Amendments to cleaners cupboards
  6. Secondary glazing to southern windows

Building Access during the works

The main entrance and ramp off Clare Market / Houghton Street is due to be closed off from 15th June 2015. Diversions will be put in place to direct staff, students and visitors the two existing entrances via St Clement's Lane.

The existing centre core lifts and stairs will be accessible from the St Clement's Lane entrance, opposite the ramp up to John Watkins Plaza. However, disabled wheelchair access will not be possible via this route due to the stepped entrance.

Disabled access into the building will be via the existing entrance on the junction of Portugal Street and St Clement's Lane which has lift access to the 5th floor. Note: The 6th floor offices will not have disabled access.

The centre core lifts and stairs are due to be demolished in the ‘’2nd  Cut’’ due to take place in December 2015. This will only take place when the new internal staircase is complete and in use, which is scheduled for the end of October 2015.

The Stage 2 plan (pdf) indicates the access with the new internal staircase as it will be at the end of the Restack works.
