The demolition phase tower crane will be moved onto site during the weekend 2nd - 3rd September 2017.

Our demolition contractor McGee Ltd will be closing Portsmouth Street to vehicles during this time to enable them to erect the crane.   As a result there will be no vehicle access through Portsmouth street, pedestrian access will be maintained.

Full details of the crane erection are set out below:

McGee Ltd have a Road Closure of Portsmouth Street agreed with Westminster City Council.

There will be a Mobile Crane set up in Portsmouth Street to receive sections of the tower crane and manoeuvre them into position inside the site. The Sections of Tower crane will arrive on lorries via Portugal Street throughout each day as noted below.

The Road Closure Timing and works sequence will be:

  • Saturday 2 September   - Road closure starts at 4am – Carried out by Westminster City Council then the following Crane delivery and erection operations commence;
    • 5am to 7am - Mobile Crane arrives and gets set up in Portsmouth Street and secure compound around mobile crane is set up using Heras fencing
    • 7am to 6pm - Deliveries of Main Tower Crane mast sections arrive throughout the day, are offloaded and erected using the Mobile crane
    • 6pm – Works cease for the day, road remains closed with Heras fencing compound left secure overnight.
  • Sunday 3 September   – The Road closure will remain up to 6pm after which Westminster City Council will reopen it. Up to 6pm the works will comprise:
    • 7am - Works commence with deliveries of the A frame and Jib sections
    • 12pm to 4pm – Jib sections lifted onto place. During this time, there will be pedestrian access disruption approx. 15 minutes on Sheffield Street which will be managed by the McGee Marshalling team
    • 4pm to 6pm – Mobile crane dismantled, road clearance carried out.
    • 6pm - Westminster City Council reopen

During the delivery and crane erection, there will be an vehicular and pedestrian exclusion zones in Portsmouth Street as noted below;

  • Vehicular

Through traffic – There will be no access for through traffic from 4am – Saturday 2 through to 6pm Sunday 3 September 2017

Deliveries - There will be no access for delivery vehicles onto Portsmouth Street from 4am – Saturday 2 September through to 6pm Sunday 3 September 2017.

  • Pedestrian

Footway access to shops, local businesses and LSE Buildings in and around Portsmouth Street will be kept open but the roadway will be closed
