History and Redevelopment

Originally known as Stewart House, it was built at the turn of the 20th Century and designed by Sir Henry Tanner, Chief Architect for HM Office of Works, for the Public Trustees Office. Following an international design competition, LSE appointed the award winning architects Grimshaw (architects of the Eden Project, Cornwall) to transform this building into a landmark teaching and research space which will be used to accommodate LSE academic activities and enable the School to grow its student numbers.
