Teaching surveys arrangements

Class/Seminar Teaching and Course Survey

What: A double-sided questionnaire requesting feedback on the individual class/seminar teacher and feedback on student satisfaction with the course as a whole at the point in time the survey is conducted.
Who: Any class/seminar teacher teaching five weeks worth of classes or more for any one course. Optional otherwise.
When:

In weeks 8 and 9 of the relevant term by the teacher concerned if s/he teaches in those weeks - if not, then at a point during the course to be determined by the Course Convener.

**IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ**
Teachers and lecturers are reminded of the need to complete the information on the survey pack envelope correctly and clearly. In addition, it is essential that surveys for each class/seminar group and lecture are returned in a seperate envelope: we cannot guarantee the integrity of results if surveys from more than one class/seminar group are returned in the same envelope.  Further information on how to conduct the surveys can be found here.

Michaelmas Term Survey For:

  • All GTAs teaching in the Michaelmas Term;
  • Any Permanent Teachers teaching half-units or at the end of their teaching for that course (e.g. when teachers change between terms, or after every three, five weeks, etc).

Lent Term Survey For:

  • Any GTAs required to repeat the exercise, and any GTAs that did not teach in the Michaelmas Term
  • Any Permanent Teachers teaching classes/seminars for full-units and Lent Term half-units.
How: All teachers are to conduct the surveys themselves and only need a survey pack to do so. Most packs will be delivered to pigeon holes for each teacher/course/group combination in time for weeks 8 and 9 of each term. Additionally, spare packs will be available in departmental offices in the first few weeks of each term (and restocked on request) so teachers can conduct the 'Class/Seminar Teaching and Course Survey' at a convenient time if they are not teaching in weeks 8 and 9 by simply picking up a spare pack; or if a pack/packs were not delivered to their pigeon holes. All teachers need to write their name, course and group number on the envelope provided/collected, and ask a student to return the completed questionnaires in the sealed envelope to the drop box in the Student Services Centre.  Please use a seperate envelope for each class/seminar group, i.e. do not return surveys from different class/seminar groups in the same envelope.
Results: Returned to individual teacher concerned, Head of Department, Director of the Teaching and Learning Centre, and Pro-Director (Teaching and Learning). Course question results returned to Course Convenors, Programme Directors, and to relevant HoDs where the course is compulsory for a programme but taught outside their department. Course scores also considered by the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee.

Lecture Survey

What: A short questionnaire requesting feedback about the individual lecturer and their lectures.
Who: Any lecturer conducting five or more lectures for any one course. Optional otherwise.
When: In weeks 8 and 9 of the relevant term by the lecturer concerned if s/he lectures in those weeks - if not, then at a point during the course to be determined by the Course Convener.
How: Questionnaires and envelopes will be delivered to departmental offices. For the avoidance of doubt: lecture packs will not be sent to pigeon holes - lecturers need to collect questionnaires and envelopes from their Departmental offices. Lecturers are to conduct the surveys themselves. They should simply write their name and course on the envelope, and a student will return the completed questionnaires in the sealed envelope to the drop box in the Student Services Centre.
Results:

Returned to the individual lecturer, Head of Department, Director of the Teaching and Learning Centre, Pro-Director (Teaching and Learning)

Teaching patterns/Non-standard teaching

There is room for common sense in this process. If a member of staff delivers all of the lectures and teaches all of the classes for a course, s/he may just hand out the Class/Seminar and Course Survey' in a lecture if s/he prefers.

The survey process described in this note will work for the majority of courses. However, we recognise that this process does not 'fit' the teaching patterns for some courses. This is the case, for example, where courses change seminar teachers on a weekly/fortnightly basis. If colleagues require a customised version of the survey process, please do get in touch with TQARO and we will help set up an appropriate survey arrangement.

If you have any questions on any of the above please contact TqaroSurveys@lse.ac.uk.
