LSE Students' Union Teaching Excellence Awards 2016

These awards, which this year attracted an amazing 1370 nominations from students, are designed to recognise everyone who makes outstanding contributions to the education of students at LSE, from teachers who love to share knowledge, encourage research and offer great feedback, to staff who mentor students and foster lively and welcoming departmental communities. Our congratulations to them all.

This short film made by the LSE Students' Union features students talking about the teachers they nominated:

LSESU Teaching Excellence Award for Departmental Excellence

Winner: Gender Institute

Gender Institute winners

‘Highly Commended’ mentions to Anthropology and Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method

Excellent Feedback and Communication

Winner: Francesco Ruggieri (Economics)

Feedback and Communication - FR

"Francesco is the definition of a teacher who goes the extra mile to explain course content, using intuition and extra diagrammatic analysis, so that everyone in the class feels totally comfortable. He's repeatedly provided detailed follow ups to topics that have been discussed in class and created extensive study notes on challenging topics. He leaves feedback that is so in-depth and supportive that there's no residual ambiguity."

‘Highly Commended’ mentions to Taylor St John (International Relations) and David Kinney (Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method)

Innovative Teaching

Winner: Eleni Katirtzoglou (Mathematics)

Innovative Teaching -EK2

"Both mathematics courses taught by Eleni are exceptional and innovative. The k-maps she encourages us to prepare are an amazing way of taking notes, are great for revision and also teach us to organise new knowledge in a structured way. The k-map project in MA209 is the unique chance at LSE to experience a group project and presentation within a Maths course. The 'hall of fame' competition gives recognition to students who do their best, encouraging us to do homeworks. I would love to see a wider adoption of those methods!"

‘Highly Commended’ mentions to Joanna Lewis (International History) and Aleksander Kloda (Economics)

Inspirational Teaching

Winner: Robert Craig (Law)

Inspirational Teaching - RC2

"Robert Craig sets the standard of an exceptional teacher that an institution with international recognition like LSE truly deserves. Not only has he improved my attitude to studying, but also has inspired by his own example to be more open-minded and engage with wider developments and debates in the society. His approach to explaining complex theories is unrivalled and is very engaging and entertaining as he is able to bring examples from the real world to a very theoretical topic."

‘Highly Commended’ mentions to Tarak Barkawi (International Relations),  Alex Gillespie (Social Psychology) and Sonia Exley (Social Policy)

Mentoring and Personal Development

Winner: Imran Malik (Accounting)

Mentoring and Personal Dev - IM

"I was able to discuss future postgraduate options with him, he assisted me with my personal statement, and introduced me to prospective courses in the field of accounting that I was not aware of. Our termly meetings always helped me refocus on my academic work. I believe that he genuinely cares about his students and is not just box ticking."

‘Highly Commended’ mentions to Viki Chinn (Careers) and Neil Lee (Geography and Environment)

Research Guidance and Support

Winner: Hayley German (Management)

Research Guidance and Support -HG2

"Hayley listened intently, took time to ask questions and understand what I was struggling with, and provided fantastic tools and resources. She has followed up after our conversations with PowerPoint slides, articles, and thoughts on how I might overcome challenges with my experiment. She has gone out of her way to be available by appointment as her office hours conflicted with my schedule. It is so reassuring to have someone to comfortably discuss ideas with."

‘Highly Commended’ mentions to Marsha Henry (Gender Institute) and Sefi Roth (Geography and Environment)

Sharing Knowledge

Winner: Austin Zeiderman (Geography and Environment)

Sharing Subject Knowledge - AZ

"Austin has introduced us to a completely new area of study (geographies of race) that none of us had been exposed to before. In order to help us understand what was sometimes quite difficult theory/subject matter, he applied the academic content to current affairs and contemporary cases, through the use of news, media, film and art. He regularly updated us on relevant film screenings/art exhibitions/lectures/talks taking place in London that were relevant to our material."

‘Highly Commended’ mentions to Ida Danewid (International Relations) and Alex Voorhoeve (Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method)

Welfare and Pastoral Support

Winner: Kate Steward (Gender Institute)

Welfare and Pastoral Support - KS2

"Kate encourages us to approach our time at LSE holistically, from social to research opportunities. During the regular receptions she organises, she makes an effort to get everyone to get involved, and often can be found circulating the room, checking in personally on how people have been doing during the term. She is very responsive to students needs and works proactively with the course reps to organise practical training workshops and alumni networking receptions that aid in our personal development."

‘Highly Commended’ mentions to Abby Innes (European Institute) and Marco Scipioni (Government)
