As the dichotomy in global growth continues between East and West, it is important to put current events in a broader historical context, looking at the development of wealth and well-being in societies. For example, Asia in 1820 was home to about two-thirds of the world's population and generated sixty per cent of world income. By 1950 Asia's income share had declined to 19 per cent, while its share of world population had reduced to just under 55%, which is where it stands right now. Today, however, Asia's share of world GDP is back up to 30% and it is rising rapidly. How do we explain these huge shifts in global economic performance?

This panel examines development trajectories, exploring the question on what drives growth for particular countries and societies. Climate, physical geography, governance are some of the issues considered in the discussion on the dynamics of sustainable economic growth and the ensuring welfare outcomes. The panel will look at how lessons from history will shape future development in the world.

A recurrent and popular theme of the most recent financial crisis and ensuing economic turmoil has been the inequity across countries and societies in dealing with the fall-out of recessions. Bankers and the financial industry have been the subject of much criticism, from causing the financial crisis to unfairly benefitting through high salaries and bonuses.

This panel takes up the broader issue of how a society should manage the benefits of economic growth. The panel will address issues such as whether there is a social role for the markets, the role of a 21st century state and international organisations in managing the imbalances of growth, and issues of development and change in society outside of the big cities in China. These issues are considered in the context of the role economies should have in providing for the well-being of societies in the future.
