Western economic strength has been sustained by the ability of businesses, large and small, to invent, innovate and drive growth through entrepreneurial endeavour. While the most recent global financial and economic crisis has had a greater negative impact on developed economies in the West, sustainable recovery will ultimately be shaped by the entrepreneurial spirit from businesses of all sizes. Entrepreneurship is not the perserve of the West, it also drives fast-growing and ambitious companies in Asia. Just as Japanese companies expanded globally in the 1980s, Chinese companies have been looking to "go global" as Western economies slowly recover.
This panel will look at this phenomenon of Eastern entrepreneurship and the drive of companies in China and Asia to expand globally. The panel will consider the opportunities and challenges facing Asian companies and economies, and also the role of state policy and state agencies - such as sovereign wealth funds - in driving Asian companies' global expansion. The implications of this expansion for Western economies will be consider, including the balance and distribution of wealth between East and West.

For over five hundred years the international order has been shaped by the overwhelming military and economic superiority of the West. But the world is not static. Nothing lasts for ever under conditions of globalization; and since the turn of the new century, economists like Danny Quah and Jim O'Neill, and geopolitical thinkers such as Niall Ferguson and Paul Kennedy, have begun to rethink the future shape of the world order. Their conclusions are as intellectually arresting as they are globally significant: the old western world - they argue - is fast losing its privileged position as new actors, most notably but not only in Asia, begin to assert themselves. As a result, one of the greatest power shifts in history is underway with consequences that could prove to be as critical to international affairs in the 21st century as the final triumph of Europe was in the nineteenth, and America's in the twentieth.
This panel will discuss these power shifts, and the implications for the stability of the international system, looking closely at China's new power, the constraints on this power and the uncertainties that exist, even within China, over what the country's foreign affairs aims ought to be.
