5:45pm - 6:10pm - Keynote Speech,  Is China's Economy Crashing?, Prof. Danny Quah, Kuwait Professor of Economics and International Development, LSE下午5:45 – 6:10 - 主题演讲

It has only been six months since the change in leadership in Government in China, and there has been an immediate impact on the Chinese economy. China's economic growth is slowing, but what does that mean for China and the world? Will China buckle under the weight of non-performing loans and shadow-banking? is a re-balancing of the economy necessary and something the new government can achieve? What will China's economy look like in the coming years? These are some of the issues, that Prof. Danny Quah will address in his keynote on the future of China's economy.

2012 closed out with a new Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. As Xi Jinping assumed office there was a new commitment to reform and cleanse the Party, securing its role for the future. In this keynote speech, a leading expert on China's history and current affairs, Prof. Arne Westad, will ask the question on whether the Party, under the new leadership, can reform for the better. Prof. Westad will examine changes in the past, under previous party leaders, and ask what this means for the future.

7:30pm - 9:00pm - Panel  on China's Foreign Policy/中国外交政策

The panel will address recent aspects in China's foreign policy, with the arrival of the new government in Beijing. The discussion will begin with an examination of domestic politics and how this shapes foreign policy and China's engagement with the world. China's territorial disuptes in East and South East Asia, and the more recent features to this protracted problem will be considered in the context of China's relations with its near-neighbours. China's intentions and actions in Asia and on the world stage will continue to be influenced by the United States. The final speech in this panel will address the USA's global role, the supposed pivot to Asia, and what it all means for future China-US relations.
