Food and drink at LSE

There is a diverse range of catering facilities on the School campus offering food and drink for all tastes, dietary needs and budgets.

Wherever you decide to eat, please think about reducing the amount of packaging from take-aways and use the communal recycling stations provided around campus to dispose of the packaging and food waste.

Please note: the opening times listed below are for term time. Please see the Catering Services web pages| in the Services and divisions channel of the LSE intranet – or check at the venues for any amendments to these during vacations.

LSE Smart Mug

LSE-Smart-MugPurchase a reusable LSE Smart Mug from selected LSE Catering outlets and receive a free hot drink. 
The mugs cost £8.50 and are sold and accepted in LSE Garrick, 4th Floor Café Bar, Café 54, Mezzanine Café, The Bean Counter and SDR Café Bar (members only).

A huge choice of great value hot and cold meals throughout the day, including international dishes, vegetarian options, salads, stir fries and pizzas.

4th Floor Café Bar

Location: 4th floor, Old Building, Houghton Street
Opening times: Monday – Friday, 11am – 8pm

A great place to relax in between lectures or unwind at the end of the day. Enjoy handmade speciality sandwiches, great cakes, barista fair-trade coffees, wines and beers.

The Bean Counter

Opening times: Monday - Friday, 8.30am - 4pm

Contemporary café offering speciality hot and cold drinks, including  freshly squeezed juices and smoothies. Delicious food including handmade gourmet sandwiches and salads, main course soups, hot pastries, fruit salads, yoghurt pots along with very more-ish cookies and cakes. The perfect place to relax and satisfy your taste buds!

Café 54

Café 54 is the ideal place to grab a bite or catch up with friends. Offering a wide selection of hot and cold drinks, hot soup and pastries, snacks, sandwiches, wraps and great salads.



The Daily Grind

Opening times: Monday - Friday, 8.45am - 3.30pm (term time)

Offering fair trade coffee and tea together with a large selection of fair trade snacks.  We only sell One water, which is a charity organisation|

The Denning Learning Café

Opening times: Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm

This new catering outlet offers both hot and cold drinks and food and also has 24 open access PC's and seating for approx. 150.

LSE Garrick

The ground floor offers speciality hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and freshly baked pastries. On the lower level you can enjoy superb quality home cooked meals at lunchtime.

Mezzanine Café

Location: mezzanine floor, New Academic Building
Opening times: Monday – Friday, 10.30am – 4pm

The Mezzanine Café overlooking the atrium of the New Academic Building is a great place to take a break between lectures. On offer are barista coffees, chai lattes, delicious smoothies and gorgeous cakes.

The Plaza Café

The place to grab a hot or cold drink and snack when keeping your head down in the Library or meeting with friends on the plaza.



The Three Tuns

The Three Tuns offers a fun atmosphere to watch live sports, listen to great music or simply enjoy an evening drink with friends at the end of the day.

The Weston Café

Opening times: Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm

Serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and fresh deli boards as well as tempting cakes this 6th floor café is the perfect place to meet friends or colleagues, with access to the fantastic roof terrace.

Wright's Bar

An old-school British style café offering breakfasts, sandwiches and hot beverages.


Staff dining room and coffee bar

An excellent lunch-time dining service and coffee bar for members of the Senior Common Room.


Coopers Restaurant and Bar

Located on the corner of Portsmouth Street, Coopers houses a restaurant with full table service and a wine bar.



George IV

Location: corner of Portugal Street and Portsmouth Street
Opening times: Monday – Friday; 12pm – 11.30pm

The LSE's very own traditional pub with an array of real ales, cold beers, wines and spirits.

Ye Olde White Horse

Independently owned, the Ye Olde White Horse is an intimate pub in keeping with the history of the area where all are welcome.


Venue hire

For LSE staff and business customers it is possible to hire conference space at the School and a variety of catering services are available for conferences, events, business meetings and private dining. The Three Tuns, as well as the Venue beneath it, which has a private bar and a high quality sound system, can be hired from the SU by students, SU societies and Athletics Union clubs, please email Alex Bond (|) for more information.

Where to eat your own food

There are a number of communal places on campus where you can eat your own food or meet with friends who have purchased food elsewhere. Please remember to take your packaging to the nearest recycling station.

Water fountains on campus

Sixty four water fountains have been provided around the campus. The majority of these are designed to allow you to refill water bottles and rinse LSE Smart Mugs.
