What is Bring Your Own Device?

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is an initiative whereby those attending IT Practical Workshops can use their own computer to complete the Workshop.

You will still have the option to use the computers provided in the training room. BYOD aims to give you the opportunity to use a device with which you are familiar.

If you are considering bringing your own device to an IT Practical Workshop, please observe the four considerations below.

1) Which Workshop you should attend

On the Training and Development System (TDS), there are two series of Workshops:

- IT Practical Workshops Microsoft Office 2013, which cover Office 2013 for Windows and Office 2016 for Mac; to book, search for Office 2013 on the TDS

- Microsoft Office 2010 IT Practical Workshops, which cover Office 2010 for Windows and Office 2011 for Mac; to book, search for Office 2010 on the TDS 

2) Which OS you need

The OS (Operating System) is the software which makes your device work.

Depending on the Workshop you are attending, your OS must be any one from the corresponding list.

3) Which Microsoft Office you need

Depending on the Workshop you are attending, your version of Microsoft Office must be from the corresponding list.

4) What you can expect from the training room

  • There are no charging facilities for public use in the training room
  • There are no network points in the training room, only eduroam
  • Any technical support queries must be referred to the Laptop Surgery
  • If you forget your device or it does not work properly, you can use the computers we provide and still work in your preferred OS
