How to connect a Windows PC to the LSE network from Halls of Residence

Introduction

This document describes how to configure a Windows computer to connect to the LSE Network from study bedrooms in Halls of Residence.

This service offers students a network connection to the Internet, H: space, Email, LSE printers, electronic Library resources, and free anti-virus and security tools.

To gain full access to the LSE network and external sites students are required to register their computer as described below, and to install and regularly update Antivirus Software. A network installation of Sophos Anti-Virus| software which updates automatically is available free of charge for current LSE staff and students.

Before you start the network configuration

This document assumes that the network card has already been installed successfully. Many computers are now supplied with Network adaptors pre-installed but if you need to purchase one, you can purchase it as follows:

You will also require an RJ45 Network cable.

Connect to the network

1. Connect the cable and adaptor to a working network point. (Note: For Windows computers the 'Local Area Network unplugged' icon should disappear from the system tray.)

2. Test your connection using your Internet browser by opening the LSE web site at http://www.lse.ac.uk|.

Registration

When you first connect to the LSE network from Halls you will be given access to the LSE domain only. This will allow you to open the LSE website and local servers for information. In order to access all sites outside the LSE it is necessary to register the network card in your omputer with the School server and install Sophos Anti-Virus.

Using your own computer, open www.lse.ac.uk/itservices/activateResidencesInternet| in your Internet browser and follow the online instructions. Unrestricted access should be granted approximately 15 minutes after activation. If you decide to connect from another LSE residence, you will need to activate it again.

Antivirus Software

Staff and students who wish to connect their own computers to the LSE network are required to install and regularly update antivirus software. LSE strongly recommends the use of Sophos Anti-Virus, available free from www.lse.ac.uk/itservices/sophos| to all current staff and students. This software, in conjunction with the registration process will enable LSE to automatically update Antivirus software throughout the school and minimise the risk to all network users.

To avoid spending any time connected to the Internet without antivirus software installed on your machine, you should follow the instructions in this order:

  1. Download the new antivirus software (Sophos)
  2. Disconnect from the Internet
  3. Uninstall your existing antivirus (e.g. McAfee)
  4. Install the new antivirus software (Sophos)

Once connected to the network, you can access LSE resources such as:

Troubleshooting

The Windows default network settings should be correct for connection to the LSE network. If possible, first check your computer with a cable and network point that is known to work.

If you're unable to access the LSE website at www.lse.ac.uk|, please check to ensure that your computer is configured to use DHCP|.

 If you receive a Duplicate name exists on the network error, please change your computer name as follows (Windows users only):

  1. Log on as an Administrator if necessary
  2. Click Start | Control Panel | System
  3. Windows Vista users only: Click Adavanced system settings
  4. Select Computer Name tab
  5. Click Change
  6. Enter T-USERNAME as your computer name (i.e. your LSE network username)
  7. Click OK
  8. Restart your computer

Most computers are configured to join a Local Area Network by default, but should you experience problems due to broadband or dial-up settings Microsoft Windows users should check Internet Option Connection settings.

  1. Click Start | (Settings) | Control Panel
  2. Double click Internet Options
  3. Select Connections tab
  4. Select Dial whenever a network connection is not present
  5. Click LAN Settings
  6. Tick Automatically detect settings
  7. Untick any other options
